World Cup: Denmark vs. Sweden

By Joe,

This is one of the crucial matches in the World Cup Qualifying Group One schedule where Denmark will take on their brother, Sweden for a place in World Cup finals 2010.  The Danes are leading Group One with 18 points and 3 more than their Scandinavian neighbor while Portugal and Hungary are on 13 points. A home win for Denmark could guarantee the red and white colors been represented in South Africa.

Coach Morten Olsen has selected a 22 men squad for his World Cup qualifying encounter against both Sweden and Hungary during the International week. Both matches will be played in Parken and Denmark have a big chance to get that one point they need to qualify for the World Cup. Olsen will be welcoming Liverpool’s defender, Daniel Aggar back to the Danish squad after recovering from his back injury. He will also have the luxury of having Nicklas Bendter and Jon Dahl Tomasson available to lead the Danish front lines.

Sweden needs to get over their disappointing 1-0 defeat last time they met Denmark in Rasunda. If they want to qualify for the World Cup then this match is a crucial one for the Swedes as they have both Hungary and Portugal breathing on the neck. Coach Lars Lagerback will need to set his tactics to attack and get at least a point against Denmark. Lagerback will be sweating to get Zlatan Ibrahimovic fit for the match so he can partner up with Johan Elmander upfront.

Denmark needs one point while Sweden needs four points to guarantee the two spot available for the World Cup in Group one. Not to point out the obvious conspiracy but a point for both teams would not harm their quest for the World Cup. Denmark might have less pressure on them so a safe bet on a draw is a good choice. Check out Betsson as they are offering 3.25 for a draw.

The Danes celebrating the win 3-2 in Portugal which put them leaders of Group one.

The World Cup Qualifying Group One will see a titanic battle between Denmark and Portugal in Parken Stadium, Copenhagen. This game could decide whether Portugal will make it to the World Cup finals in South Africa next year. They are currently third in the group and needing a good result in Copenhagen.

The Danish team is leading group one with 16 points after 7 games played. They are undefeated in their World Cup campaign and could go on and qualify first in the group if they beat Portugal this Saturday. Coach Morten Olsen has given a late call up to Søren Rieks, Esbjerg fB, after Martin Bernburg, Brøndby IF, pulled out with a knee injury. Chris Sørensen has also pulled out of the squad while goal keeper Jesper Christiansen damaged his elbow which will be replaced by Kim Christensen. Goal keeper Thomas Sørensen is suspended against Portugal and Olsen will have to select carefully who his first choice goal keeper will be for the crucial match.

Portugal will be bringing all the big names to Copenhagen. Coach Llido Vale has brought in Boswinga, Carvalho, Nani, Deco, Ronaldo and Gomes for the crucial match against the Danes in Denmark. Portugal is currently third in group one with 9 points after 6 games. They are 4 points from Hungary who is currently second in the group. If they want to qualify for the world cup then they need to start winning soon or otherwise they will have a good vacation next summer. The Portugal national team could deploy Sporting Lissabon top scorer Liedson in the front after Hugo Almeida received an injury.

Denmark are undefeated in Parken Stadium and Portugal have got most of their points away from home. The Danes beat Portugal 3-2 back in September 2008 so this time around the Portuguese will have to go to Denmark in search for 3 points. The Danes will have to be cautious or otherwise it could be an embarrassing defeat.  A draw could be the ideal score line of the night and Betsson is offering 3.20 for a draw.
