Can Rafa Benitez provide Liverpool another epic run in the Champions League final in Madrid?

European night returns to Anfield this midweek and the Hungarian champions Debreceni VSC will be contesting the five times European Champions winner, Liverpool. This is the one of the first clashes in Group E of the Champions League, Lyon and Fiorentina are the other teams which make up the group. Liverpool’s captain Steven Gerrard and talisman Fernando Torres will form partnership to lead the attack.

Liverpool is a different team when it comes to the Champions League. The team have a special place in the European scene and many of the teams will fear to meet them at Anfield. Coach Rafa Benitez are competing in their sixth successive group-stage campaign and not once have they failed to reach the last 16. Prior to the match against Debreceni, Liverpool was victorious at home in the weekend against Burnley with Yossi Benayoun scoring a hat trick in the 4-0 emphatic win. Javier Mascherano will return after missing out against Burnley and defender Fabio Aurelio might make the bench.

The Hungarian champion will become the first team from their country to play in the Champions League group stages since Ferencvarosi TC in 1005/96. Debreceni started their Champions League run in the second qualifying round and successfully beaten off Kalmar FF, Tallinn and Levski Sofia. Läszló Bodnar is the one of the players in the Debreceni squad who has played against Liverpool and was defeated twice with Dynamo Kyiv in the 2001 Champions League run.

Liverpool is slowly finding their form in the domestic league and now they will have to transfer this to the European scenes. The last time Liverpool lost at home was against Chelsea in the quarterfinals 2008/09 campaign. The Hungarian could be Liverpool’s first victim in the quest for their sixth Champions League title, and Betsson is offering Liverpool at 1.11 for a win.
