Community Shield Manchester United

The first official game of the English season will start at Wembley Stadium where the current Champion of Premier League will meet the current FA Cup holder. This game is a prelude to the kickoff to the English Premier League. The Community Shield is held annually and all the money raised on the day will go to the selected charity appointed by the English FA. This is a truly great day for English football as the FA works towards giving back to the community.

It is the third consecutive year that the current Champion of Premier League will play their Community Shield at Wembley. They won the 2007 and 2008 Community Shield on penalties against both Chelsea and Portsmouth, thanks to goalie Edwin Van De Saar. However, Van De Saar will not be at this year’s Community Shield due to a surgery on the broken finger on his left hand. He is set to be replaced by Kuszczak. The squad played a friendly match against Valencia last Wednesday, it ended 2-2 where Rooney and Tom Cleverley, where Cleverly had realized his boyhood dream in scoring his first goal in Stretford End. The Community Shield is a stern test for Sir Alex Ferguson as this is one competition that he excels above and beyond others.

Chelsea returns to Wembley after lifting the 2009 FA Cup final three months ago. This will be their third appearance in the last 4 years in the Community Shield. This will be the first official match for newly appointed Chelsea Coach Carlo Ancelotti and interestingly he has not bought any new players into the squad. Chelsea have seen their key players signing extension to their current contracts. Both Drogba and Lampard have renewed while John Terry is on the verge being offered a new contract. Chelsea will be challenging for the Premier League and this is a good game to see where they are at the moment.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already come out and confirms that Chelsea will be their main rivals for the Premiership title. This could be a mind game to give extra pressure on Chelsea and their new coach. Ancelotti will bring a new football style to Chelsea and hopefully it will be tested out in the Community Shield, a draw and penalties to end this match is the most likely result and Betsson is offering odds 3.10 for a draw.
