Football Transfers – June 2009

In Football, Transfer on June 29, 2009 at 08:49

By Joe,

kaka ronaldo

As many domestic leagues are preparing for the new season, many European clubs are heavily investing in new players to strengthen their squad. Record signing has been broken once again and Real Madrid have been dominating the headlines.

Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid – £80 million

World most expensive player, Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed to play for Real Madrid for the next 6 years. He leaves Manchester United after playing 292 games for them, winning 1 Champions League title, three Premiership title, one FA cup, two League Cups and one Fifa Club World Cup. He was bought by Alex Ferguson for only £12.25 million as a replacement for David Beckham. Now he seems to be following the footsteps of David Beckham and overshadowing him with the heavily price tag. It is believed that Ronaldo has a £90 million buyout clause. Ronaldo will be presented at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium later in July.

Kaka to Real Madrid – £56 million

2nd world most expensive player, Brazilian Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite or better known as Kaka, left AC Milan for Real Madrid at the price of £56 million. Before Ronaldo’s transfer, Kaka’s transfer broke the existing world record transfer at £48million for Zinedine Zidane, the price Real Madrid paid for him. A bid from Manchester City earlier this year at £100 million was offered but Kaka rejected the move to England. Kaka signed a 6 year contract with Real Madrid and the team look like returning back to the been the Galacticos team once again. Kaka will be presented at 20:30 CET on 30 June at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Glen Johnson to Liverpool F.C – £17.5m

Liverpool signed England’s right back Glen Johnson from Portsmouth after fighting off bids from Chelsea and Manchester City. This is Rafa Benitz’s first signing of the season looks to be strengthen his team to mount an assault on trophies in the new season. Johnsen will be happy to join a team with the likes of Captain Gerrard and Torres in the squad. The signing of Glen Johnson could see a few players leave Liverpool this summer.

Santa Cruz £16.5m and Gareth Barry – £12m (Manchester City)

Mark Hughes has been given money to spend and he has not dissapointed Manchester City fans so far in spending them. They have signed Gareth Barry for £12 million from Aston Villa, earlier on the month, and recently signed Santa Cruz from Blackburn for £16.5m. Manchester City seems to have every superstar on their wish list but they just don’t seem to have that appeal as Madrid or Milan. They certainly don’t look like stopping at this point.

Teams that will be spending and selling:

Watch out for these teams, as they will be headlining many front pages of the newspaper next month. Real Madrid has already been spending alot money recently so it could be time for them to sell. Barcelona won’t be watching their rivals stealing all the headlines, they will have to come up with something soon. AC Milan and Manchester United will begin to find the right players to replace the superstar they lost. Both teams have a lot of money to spend and there might be some big names coming their way. Chelsea has been awfully quiet but like Manchester City, they will always be part of the transfer rumors.

Now that Ronaldo and Kaka has found their new homes. Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o and Valencia’s David Villa will probably hit the headlines in July.

England U21 vs. Germany U21 Final

In England, Football on June 28, 2009 at 21:55

By Joe,

stuart pearce England Germany U21 Final

The England U21 have been impressive at the Under 21 European Championship in Sweden. They will be facing the Germany’s Under 21 at Malmo for the Under-21 Championships trophy.  England beat host nation, Sweden on penalties after letting slip a 3-0 half time lead to reach the final. Germany beat Italy 1-0 in their semifinals to reach the finals. Both teams are on form and once again the international rivalry between the two countries continues.

England led by former national player, Stuart Pearce is seeking victory over the German rivals to cement his first trophy in his managerial career. Stuart Pearce led England to the final for the first time since 1984, when England beat Spain 3-0. He will have some headaches over his selection of the starting lineup, since goal keeper Hart and striker Agbonlahor both picked up second yellow cards in the semifinal win over Sweden. Forward Frazier Campbell was also sent off in extra-time. In the absence of Agbonlahor and Campbell,  Theo Walcott is expected to play as a central striker. Pearce will also have to decide whether Joe Lewis or Scott Loach will play in goal.

Germany, who drew 1-1 with England in the group stages, are looking to go one better this time around. Coach Hrubesch was delighted over the win against 1-0 Italy in the semifinal and keeping their third consecutive clean sheet. Hrubesch will have to play against England without suspended Ashkan Dejagah and Marko Marin. Striker Sandro Wagner and Captain Sami Khedira will be part of the starting lineup.

It is hard to say who the favorites are for this Under 21 European Championship Finals. Both teams played each other and that ended up in a tie. It wouldn’t be surprising if this game went into extra time. Therefore, with that in mind Ladbrokes is offering odds at 3.00 for a draw after 90 minutes of regular play.

Brazil vs USA Final

In FIFA Confederation Cup, Football on June 26, 2009 at 20:37

By Joe,

This must be one of the most surprising lineups for the Confederations cup final. The favorites to win the tournament, Brazil have reached the finals by winning all of their games. Their opponent in the final, USA are heavily tipped as underdog. Brazil have already beaten USA in the group stages second round with 3-0. No matter what the result will be, USA have achieved the most extraordinary result in their history of football by reaching their first ever international final. Brazil could retain and win their second consecutive Confederations cup.

Brazil have already met USA in the group stages of the Confederations cup final. They led the first half with 2-0 and added another goal in the 2nd half. A repeat of this result would come very handy for the Brazilian team in the Confederations cup final. Coach Dunga has not slacked in his choices of players for his starting lineup throughout the tournament. He will again start with his strongest line up so expect players like Kaka, Robinho and Luis Fabanio to lead the front lines. The only doubtful in the squad is defender Juan as he is still recovering from his knee injury.

USA would not like a repeat of their last week’s encounter with Brazil in Tshwane/Pretoria. Although, USA have made dramatic changes after that match, they have been successful in beating Egypt with 3-0 and stopping Spain’s 35-game unbeaten streak with the impressive 2-0 result in the Confederations cup semifinals. This will be Team USA first final in the international scene and it is certainly one of their best performances up to date. Coach Bradley will go into the Brazil game with high optimistism. Their last game must have given them more confidence and higher morale after dumping the European Champions out of the tournament. Sadly, USA do hold one of the most unfortunate records of being one of the dirtiest teams in the tournament, racking up their fourth consecutive red card.

USA play a very defensive game against the big nations. If you believe in statistics then Team USA will ultimately be bombarded with an average of 25 goal attempts from their opponent during the 90 minutes. If they can avoid conceding goals on the night then they will have every chance to win the Cup. The Brazilians have that scoring factor and it is predicted that they will be attacking the Americans from the start. So Brazil to win and Ladbrokes is offering at odds 1.33 to win.

Third Place Playoff: South Africa vs Spain

In FIFA Confederation Cup, Football on June 26, 2009 at 18:16

By Joe,

This is one of the last games of Fifa Confederation Cup where the host nation will meet Spain again in the city of Rustenburg. Both teams will bow out of the tournament competing for the third place of Fifa Confederation Cup. Both teams lost in their semifinals but it was Spain’s surprising defeat to USA that shocked the football world. Despite the defeat, Spain are still favorite to beat South Africa.

This is South Africa’s first Fifa Confederation Cup and they have impressed many people by reaching the third place play off. South Africa met Spain earlier last week in the group stages in the last playing day. South Africa needed a win or draw to go through to the semifinals but Spain denied them by winning 2-0 on the night. Despite the defeat to the host nation, they still qualified for the semifinals. In the semifinals, South Africa impressed against Brazil and they only narrowly lost 1-0 in the dying moments of the 2nd half. They demonstrated that they can compete with the strong football nations and could match Spain once again. Coach Joel Santana will hope that South Africa can finish third place and revenge for their earlier 2-0 defeat to Spain

Up to the semifinals, Spain were in great form, they scored 8 goals and did not concede any goals. They also enjoyed the successfully 35 unbeaten winning streaks going into the USA game. However, this came to an end when they were stunned by playing the team USA in the semifinals. Spain were not able to be more cynical in front of the goal and some poor defending meant that Spain were denied of a dream final against Brazil. Del Bosque will have to rally his troops and win the third place for pride sake. Although, you never know with Del Bosque, as he could start with some fringe players as a reaction to his player’s performance against USA.

It was not expected that Spain would be finishing this tournament by playing South Africa for the third place. Spain are favorite to beat South Africa again and the Bafana Bafana boys will certainly put a show for the fans as an appreciation of their support. A win here would suit the host nation, but Spain has also got good value at mybet as they are offering 1.55 for a Spain win.

Who will miss Michael Jackson

In News - General on June 26, 2009 at 16:12

By Joe,
Michael JACKSON stadium1

Stadium all around the world changing its image to stage the iconic pop star, Michael Jackson

The sad news came so suddenly and this was shocking to many punters, bookies and football fans around the world. Michael Jackson affected the sporting world and the gambling industry in so many different ways that you might never have thought of. There were always a flutter or two regarding his ongoing public image to his talents. However, with his death, these bets might cease to an end. In the sporting world, there are many who will be enjoying his music across the stadiums and many will use his music for motivational purposes.

Many bookies have been taking bets for or against Michael Jackson ever since he started his career with the Jackson Five. Recent bets have centered on whether he will be actually performing at the O2 Arena, “This is it” tour in London, which was going to be staged in the fortnight. In a long run, you would have thought that the bookies would be probably laughing all the way to the bank with their winning. Well think again, with so many dedicated MJ fans worldwide betting on Michael Jackson to succeed, the bookies might be the ones who have lost more in the long run. After hearing the news that Michael Jackson has passed away, all current bets have been ceased. The bookies did not value much on MJ  to play in all of his scheduled 50 concerts at the O2 Arena, so that round goes to the bookies. Never the less, the lost of MJ will definitely impact us, financially.

How many of you have heard a Michael Jackson’s song play during pre-event, interval or even post-event at either in a stadium, public events, major events or special events? Around the world, in many football stadiums, you would somehow have heard a Michael Jackson’s song been played one time or another. Many stadiums have also hosted the big mega superstar too. Now there will be only memories of him echoing through the sounds speakers and through his endorsement of the popular drink – Pepsi.

The Football and the Gambling Industry will miss him. Through good times and bad time, he will be remember as one of the greatest artist in the History of Pop.

Brazil vs South Africa

In FIFA Confederation Cup, Football on June 22, 2009 at 22:20

By Joe,

The second semifinals in the Fifa Confederation Cup will see mighty Brazil take on the host nation, South Africa, at Johannesburg. Winners of Group B, Brazil, have been one of the best teams in the tournament. They are also one of the public’s favorite teams to watch and support in South Africa. However, this time around they will not get the same support from the home crowd as they face the home nation.

Brazil’s route to the semifinals have been impressive strings of results. They beat Egypt 4-3, crushed USA 3-0 and eliminated World cup winners Italy with 3-0 in their last game. They average 3 goals per game and conceded 3 goals in the group stages. Coach Dunga surprised a few people after naming a strong starting lineup against Italy as it was predicted that he would give a rest to a few players in his squad. Since that didn’t happen, it is obvious he will be recalling the same lineup to face South Africa. However, Juan will be placed by Luisao in the defense.  With players like Kaka, Luis Fabiano and Robinho at the front lines, could you resist another 3 goals performance from Brazil?

The Bafana Bafana boys did not get to the semifinals on their own merits. They had to rely on other teams to lose in order to progress to the semifinals. South Africa played 3 games, drew with Iraq, beat New Zealand 2-0 and lost to Group A winners Spain with 2-0. Despite their results, this is their best moments in the international scene and what is more important that it is in front of their own fans. Thembinkosi Fanteni and Steven Pienaar are one yellow card away from suspension. MacBeth Sibaya is suspended for the game against Brazil. Coach Joel Santana will need to replace them and hope they will produce a sensational result over where his birth country.

Brazil are clear favorites here. Dunga wants his team to stay focus and somewhat keep the standards up with 3 goals per game. They are a team that can turn the game around if you give them space and time. Against Italy, they score 3 goals in 8 minutes and this could happen on Thursday evening if South Africa does not keep their guard up. No matter what the result would be for South Africa, they should be proud of their achievements staging the Confederation Cup and reaching the semifinals. Look at mybet is offering 1.30 for Brazil to win.

Spain vs USA

In FIFA Confederation Cup, Football on June 22, 2009 at 17:25

By Joe,

Spain Torres Villa

This is the first semifinals in the Fifa Confederation Cup in South Africa. Spain, the Group A winner, will take on the surprising Group B’s second placed team, USA, at The Free State Stadium in Manguaung/Bloemfontein. Spain are heavily favorites to go through as the team have already won 3 games out of 3 enroute to the semifinals. USA won their last game and got through to the semifinals only on a better goal difference.

Spain powered their way into the semifinals without conceding a single goal and scored a total of 8 goals in 3 matches. They are by far the best team in group A and also simply one of the best teams in the tournament. They didn’t played to their full strength against New Zealand, Iraq and South Africa. Del Bosque had the chances to experiment with his team’s formation and tested out a few of the fringe players on the squad too. Spain were also rarely tested in the defense from their opponents. As Del Bosque prepares for the semifinal clash with the Americans, he will be happy to know that his squad is at full strength. Torres and Villa will most likely start upfront while Xabi Alonso and Fabregas will marshal the midfield. Xabi Alonso and Carlos Marchene are one yellow card away from suspension. Spain set a world record of 15 consecutive internationals wins after beating South Africa, they seem to be on course for their 16th.

USA surprised the world in getting into the semifinals. Before their last game against Egypt, they were at the foot of the table with no point and goal difference of negative five goals. At the end of the night, they beat Egypt with 3-0 and eliminated them from the tournament. They also needed a helping hand from Brazil in order for them to qualify. Brazil beat Italy 3-0 which helped Team USA to go on top of Italy through goal difference. This is the first time that USA have reached semifinals of an international tournament. Coach Bradley will certainly recall all the players who started against Egypt and hope they can produce another sensation.

Spain looks invincible at the moment. With 6 goals between the pair, Torres and Villa are one of the most feared partnerships in this tournament. USA usually do not come up with the goodies against the strong football nations and their defense do look a bit shaky at certain times. Team USA will find it tough to handle the Spanish front men for the 90 minutes. Spain look likely to advance to the finals and mybet is offering Spain at 1.30 to win.

Wimbledon Ladies’ Championship 2009

In Tennis, Wimbledon on June 21, 2009 at 23:15

By Joe,

Senera and Venus Williams Wimbledon 2009

The recent Wimbledon ladies’ draws have given a boost for the Williams sisters as they have been drawn on opposite halves. This event has been dominated by the Williams sisters for the past seven years out of nine. Venus has won this event 5 times while Serena only rattled up 2. Venus won this event for the last two years she returns to Wimbledon to defend her title, hoping to take her tally up to 6th SW19 trophy.

The number one challenger to the Williams sisters is Russian Dinara Safina. She is currently world number one and is seeded first at Wimbledon. She could meet Venus in the semifinals and Serena in the Finals. Safina is currently on top form, she was a finalist at the French Open and has already secured the Australian Open trophy. Although Safina can only meet Venus first in the semifinals, she will have some tough competitions along the route to the finals. Venus can meet Serbian Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round and another Serbian Jelena Jankovic in the quarterfinals. Other challengers who are in for a shout, Svetlana Kuznetsova, who recently won the French Open, is in top form going into Wimbledon and Olympic gold medalist and World number 5, Elena Dementieva will be contesting Serena Williams for her route to the final.

Two former Wimbledon champions, Russian Maria Sharapova and French Amelie Mauresmo, are seeded outside the top 10 and will have to work harder than the rest if they are in a chance to win Wimbledon. Danish Caroline Wozniacki, Chinese Li Nai, Austria Jelena Dokic, Thailand Tamarine Tanasugarn, Israeli Shahar Peer and Indian Sania Mirza has the potential to surprise a few people at Wimbledon.

The Verdict:

The Williams sisters have lots of competition for the Wimbledon title this year. Venus Williams has the hardest route to the final and will face many tough competitors in order to win her 3rd consecutive Wimbledon Title. Serena looks favorable to appear in the finals, whether it is her sister on the other side net, that remains to be seen. However, Safina is someone that could certainly be on the other side of the net too.

Check out Ladbrokes as they are offering Serena Williams at odds 3.25 to win Wimbledon while Dinara Safina odds at 11.00 to win.

Wimbledon Men Championship 2009

In Tennis, Wimbledon on June 21, 2009 at 09:15

By Joe,

Wimbledon 2009

The Wimbledon 2009 Men tournament gets underway on Monday the 22nd of June at SW19. For those of you who are lucky enough to have secured tickets for this event, then you are in for a titanic battle this year’s edition of Men’s Wimbledon.

Let’s look a bit of the history of Wimbledon. Last year, Rafael Nadal won his first Wimbledon by beating Roger Federer after 8 hours of play. The previous years, Roger Federer has won this competition 5 times in a roll. So looking through the statistic, it would be fair to say that Federer has dominated this event. Nadal will be the first champion not to defend his SW19 crown since Croatia’s Goran Ivanisevic skipped the event in 2002.

For the Title:

World number 2, Roger Federer is by far the person to beat as he is a grass court specialist who also recently won the French Open.  Five-time champion Roger Federer will open against Yen-Hsun Lu. He could face Novak Djokovic (4th in the World) in the later stages of Wimbledon.

World number 3, Andy Murray will not be concerned on who stands between him and Wimbledon glory. With Nadal’s absence, Murray knows that it is only one step closer to his dream of stepping out to Center Court of the Men’s Final. He is in top form as he won the Queen’s tournament a week ago and now he sets his eyes on the Wimbledon. Murray is drawn to play Robert Kendrick in the 1st Round. The potential threats for Murray will be Fernando Gonzalez, James Blake and Stanislas Wawrinka in his section.

World number 5, Argentinean Del Potro could surprise a few people at Wimbledon. He will be stepping into Nadal’s slot and face Arnaud Clement in the first round.

Andy Roddick, World number 6, has an outside chance to win this tournament. Roddick has won this event twice before so it will be hard to discount him. He will face Jeremy Chardy of France in the first round.

Other long shots:

The twelfth seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia will open with British Daniel Evans. Another British contingency, James Ward will play seventh seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Watch out for the French Gilies Simon, Ace hitter Ivo Karlovic and Llyeton Hewitt as they could go far.

Marcos Baghdatis and Gael Monfils have withdrawn from Wimbledon due to injuries.

The Verdict:

Federer looks likely the obvious winner at Wimbledon. The threat will come from Murray now since Nadal has pulled out from the tournament. Roger Federer is looking for a 14th grand slam record and his sixth Wimbledon triumph. Murray seems to be the man to derail Federer but they will only meet in the finals. Murray could be heading for his first Wimbledon final as he will concentrate on how to beat the favorites for the title, Roger Federer.

Have a look at Ladbrokes as they are offering Roger Federer odds 1.72 and Andy Murray 2.75 to win Wimbledon.
